How the end for a personal favourite was reported on TOPS. D1056 Western Sultan, the machine I rode the most miles behind, had only enjoyed the spotlight of returning the Western China Clay special on December 4, 1976. However, on December 15, she was taken out of traffic for good at 10.30. Her last movement being a light engine trip home from Exeter on one engine. She was due for a ‘C’ Exam and ultrasonic axle test but failed to get them and was condemned, or as TOPS put it, ‘Written Off’.
