How the end came for D1057 Western Chieftain in April 1976 on TOPS. She worked from Bristol to Plymouth on the (4B10), 16.05 on April 30 and arrived at Laira at 20.00 as shown here. An engine defect and planned withdrawal policy brought about her final demise. ‘FOR’ is the TOPS code for ‘Written Off’.
The final note in D1057’s repair book in April 1976 was made after the loco had failed at Reading while in charge of the (1B03) 07.30 Paddington-Penzance, which turned out to be its final passenger working. Class 47, 47033 worked the service forward from Reading. D1057 was withdrawn on April 30 as seen from the TOPS report above.
