Western Liveries, 2001
His second book, Western Liveries, marked a groundbreaking moment in railway publishing history, certainly for diesel locomotive classes at any rate. For the first time ever, a book depicting every livery worn by and individual locomotive was pinpointed with dates and photographs. It set the standard for many enthusiasts to follow suit and work out their own breakdowns for a various other locomotives classes, even if their findings were never published in the main stream railway press. Again produced in a handy A5 size, Western Liveries was another immediate hit and sold out within a month of its publication. The handy reference book became the ‘go-to’ body of work for enthusiasts and much of the information has since been heavily used by them on railway forums across the UK. As one review on Amazon wrote: “This book is MUST for any diesel or Western enthusiast with an avid interest in liveries. It is also perfect for the modeller trying to recreate a period in history as they will be able to tell immediately when a Class 52 was carrying a particular livery.”
